Walt Disney’S Beauty And The Beast – Things That Made Me Wonder
Beauty And The Beast (1991) is one of the most popular animated features. It was the first full length animated feature to ever be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. In 1997, Disney release midquel-sequel Beauty And The Beast: Enchanted Christmas which was a direct to video film.
I first watched Beauty And The Beast when I was six and, back then, all I cared about were the pretty pictures and the beautiful songs. I watched Beauty And The Beast followed by the Enchanted Christmas a few days ago and noticed a couple of things which made me wonder.
- What’s the distant between the village and the castle? When Belle’s father finds refuge in the castle it seems far. When Belle goes after him, she leaves in what seems like morning or noon and arrives at night. But when Gaston goes to the castle to kill the Beast and Belle runs after him to stop him, it looks close. Or is there a shortcut they forgot to tell us about?
- Fine, the distant between the castle and the village isn’t clear, but you’d expect that people would have heard a myth about an enchanted castle where the master was turned into a Beast and the other habitant into household items.
- The narrator said that the Beast was a Prince. So he’s supposed to have sovereignty over people and land, in other words, a kingdom. But they are no mention of it. Didn’t they miss their royalty? His servants refer to him as Master. He is called “Your Majesty” only once in Enchanted Christmas. Could it be that he wasn’t an actual Prince but a wealthy Lord?
- In Enchanted Christmas, who are the people going to the Christmas party? Villagers, people from the kingdom? Guests from far lands?
- In Enchanted Christmas, we are shown that the “Prince” was turned into the Beast on Christmas and at the Christmas party, Belle was wearing a yellow dress. In the original movie, the narrator tells us that the spell had to be broken before his 21st birthday, that’s when the last petal of rose will falls. While preparing the diner date, Cogsworth, Lumiere and Mrs. Pot said that it was their last day to try and have the spell broken and at the date, Belle is wearing the same yellow dress as in the Christmas party. Does it mean that the master was born the day after Christmas?
- Didn’t Mrs. Pot notice that Chip was missing or was she distracted by the castle assailants or couldn’t tell because all the cups looked alike?
- While Lumiere and the dishes were singing and dancing Be Our Guest, did Belle actually eat? They only show her tasting some pastry and drink a cup of tea. Yet again, that’s probable all a size -12 needs.
- After Beast saved Belle from the Beast then collapsed, how did she manage to put him on Phillip, her horse? She doesn’t look like wonder woman to me.
- Wouldn’t you say that Mrs. Pot looks more like Chip’s grandmother than mother? Did she adopt him? Did she give birth at an advanced age? The later will lead us to wonder about a Mr. Pot.
- When going to invade the castle, did Gaston or any of the man who followed him knew or suspected that the Beast used to be human?
- Why didn’t the armors fight when the castle was under attack? They looked like the most suitable people to handle the situation or were they stuck to their pedestals?
- Why didn’t Beast ever asked the magic mirror to show him who will break the spell? Or it only showed people who were in the castle.
- Did anyone notice that Belle shares some traits with Cinderella? Yet again, most Disney Characters look alike: Prince Eric (The Little Mermaid) like Aladdin, Jafar like Scar, Yzma (The Emperor’s New Groove) like Cruella Devil. The Castles too.
Luckily, the movie was target to a young audience and they ask fewer questions, sometimes. Anyway, I still love and enjoy Beauty And The Beast very much and believe that it deserves every single nominations, awards and honors it received.
